our secret endeavors

From Mayakovskaya to the Planetarium
a warm summer shower poured down
You mentioned you’re a proletarian
and my dress clung to my bum
That day was happily ticking
though people queued up to get tickets
All sold out. And the pavement’s
in briquettes, all torn up to hell.
You cursed as you walked by the curb
with your feet wet, clearly disturbed
And only when we lived through it all
we saw it was the best of our days

In the smoked-up club
you bit your lips in jealousy
In desperation you picked up
gals not very tender
When your friends danced with me
I was so happy
Feeling your eyes on me
I was on a bender

I brought you a tank
with a control console
saying, Hi, happy birthday, have a ball
Here’s your tank,
there’s the way to the Kremlin –
no transfers, straight and crackling but
Your jealous stare fixed on my cleavage
with its unsuspecting tits,
and the garbage
from the bowl of your ex
was aimed at my sex
and you were so cute
that we almost fought for you
Come on, take a look back
to our Moscow to Leningrad trek
where on the back seat
we were doing the thing we were born of

It was you who saved me
from the thoughts of fall
and my friends’ last call
As we were rolling north
from the megalopolis
through the woods
Oh you would,
you’d remember it all, you would
That day was happily ticking
though people queued up to get tickets
All sold out. And the pavement’s
in briquettes, all torn up to hell.
You cursed as you walked by the curb
with your feet wet, clearly disturbed
And only when we lived through it all
we saw it was the best of our days
